NINTENDO has announced a cheap new version of its popular handheld Switch console.
UK pricing hasn't been announced yet, but the new model is $199.99 down from $299.99 in the USA – so there's hope for a similar cut in the UK.
The new Nintendo Switch Lite could end up costing as much as £100 less than the £279.99 Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo's price cut doesn't come without a catch though: you can't plug the Switch Lite into a television, unlike the original Switch.
That means you'll only be able to use the Switch Lite as a portable handheld console.
The good news is that the Switch Lite supports all the handheld games that are available on the main Switch.
Nintendo does caveat this by saying: "The new device can play all games in the robust Nintendo Switch library that support handheld mode, although some games will have restrictions."
The new console is also available in three different colours: yellow, grey and turquoise.
Nintendo doesn't appear to have announced UK pricing yet, but has confirmed a September 20 release date.
"Adding Nintendo Switch Lite to the lineup gives gamers more colour and price point options," said Doug Bowser, who heads up Nintendo of America.
"Now consumers can choose the system that best suits how they like to play their favourite Nintendo Switch games."
Nintendo Switch vs Switch Lite – what's the difference?
Here's what you need to know...
- The Nintendo Switch Lite doesn't plug into your television – it's handheld-only
- Its Joy-Con controls aren't detachable, and are built into the handset's body
- There's no TV docking station, so you'll charge your device using a cable
- Some games will have restrictions, due to the console being handheld-only
- There are three new colours: yellow, grey and turquoise
- The Switch Lite is $100 cheaper than the Switch proper
The design has also changed slightly from the Nintendo Switch proper.
On the full-size version, the buttons and joysticks are clip onto the side of the screen, and can be detached for wireless use.
With the Switch Lite, the buttons and joysticks are built directly into the body of the device – and can't be removed.
That's not a huge issue, as you'll only be using the Switch Lite as a handheld gadget.
The normal Switch only has detachable "Joy Cons" for distance usage when your Switch console is plugged into a TV.
Nintendo's Switch Lite also doesn't come with a TV dock either, so you'll need to power it up with a standard charging cable.
In addition to the three launch colours, Nintendo has confirmed plans to release a limited Nintendo Switch Lite Zacian & Zamazenta Edition console on November 8.
This will feature "stylish cyan and magenta buttons", as well as illustrations of the two new Legendary Pokémon from the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games.
These two games will be available on November 15.
The Sun has asked Nintendo for more details on pricing and will update this story with any response.
