Apple really IS slowing down your iPhone – but pledges to warn you if new iOS updates will make your handset sluggish

Apple is now bound by this agreement and any breach will result in legal action

APPLE has admitted that some of its updates could slow down your iPhone but has promised to be more upfront with users regarding the battery life and performance of their devices.

The tech giant has told the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that it will inform users very clearly about how their iPhone battery is affecting the speed of their smartphone.

Apple users have been complaining for a while that certain iOS updates appear to slow down their phones.

The company will now be issuing warnings alongside new updates to let people know if this is going to happen.

Last year, the CMA raised consumer law concerns with Apple because it thought iPhone users were not being informed that software updates designed to manage battery demands were actually slowing down phone performance.

Apple did release lots of new information about battery life after this but has only just agreed with the CMA to keep doing so.

The CMA has said that Apple is now bound by this agreement and any breach of it will result in legal action.

In 2017, Apple caused outrage when it confirmed that it had been slowing down the performance of older iPhone handsets in order to preserve battery life.

It has since apologised and added a feature to older devices that enables users to switch off the performance control tool if they don't mind about their phone battery dying a bit quicker.

At the time, Apple chief executive Tim Cook said: "Our actions were all in service of the user, I can't stress that enough.

"Maybe we should have been clearer at a point in time but our actions were always the purest."
