Google Chrome adds new ‘Dark Mode’ to Windows 10 – here’s how to get it before anyone else
This should make reading in the dark far easier on your eyes
GOOGLE Chrome is rolling out a new "Dark Mode" for Windows 10 that makes the browser far easier on the eyes at night.
It's packaged in Chrome's latest update, but won't roll out to everyone right away, with a wider release expected in the near future.
Even if you're not one of the lucky few to get your hands on Dark Mode early, there's one trick that means anyone can use it – read our guide to find out more.
What is Google Chrome Dark Mode?
Lots of apps and websites now offering Dark Mode settings – including Twitter, Reddit, Facebook Messenger and Gmail.
WhatsApp is testing Dark Mode, and Facebook is trialling it too – all with the aim of soothing your eyes.
Science has suggested that bright lights (and blue light, in particular) can have a detrimental effect on your eyes, and on sleeping patterns.
So switching to Dark Mode could be good for your health.
Google Chrome is now offering this feature, but it only changes some Google pages and the main theme of the browser.
Sadly, if you log onto a very bright website, it will still be blinding at night – unless that website adds a Dark Mode of its own.
How to get Google Chrome Dark Mode today
Google says it's rolling Dark Mode out to a small number of users who download the update, with a wider release coming in the near future.
But if you don't want to wait for that, you can simply make a quick change to your Google Chrome shortcut.
First, you'll need to update to the latest version of Google Chrome – "Chrome 74" – in your settings.
Find the shortcut you use to launch Google Chrome, and right click to select "properties".
From here, add "--force-dark-mode" to the end of the target location (but without the quotes).
Voila, the next time you open Chrome, Dark Mode should be enabled.
