UNFOLDING DRAMA

Samsung Galaxy Fold line set to EXPAND with two new double-bend tablets despite huge durability doubts

The firm was forced to delay the launch of the original Fold this week

SAMSUNG was forced to delay the launch of its hotly anticipated folding smartphone this week after early reviews found the £1,800 gizmo's screen broke after just a couple days of use.

But it seems that's not stalled the South Korean tech titan, with two new versions of the Galaxy Fold reportedly in the works.

They'll come with 8" and 13" displays that bend in two places, rather than in one place like the "original" Fold, which bends like a book via a crease down the middle of the screen.

Samsung announced yesterday that it was delaying the Fold's release after testers reported issues with the device.

Some journalists with early access to the phone noticed that half of the screen stopped working while others damaged the device by mistakenly removing a protective layer.

Two successors to the Fold are already on their way despite this week's durability scandal, according to a new report.

They'll be developed in about a year, with prototypes already built.

And the gadgets will boast two folding creases. One folds like an "S", while the other bends like a "G".

According to one inside source, the folding tablets will use many of the same parts as the current Fold, despite recent malfunctions at the hands of reviewers.

They told South Korean site : "The parts used in the folders are mostly the same as those of the existing smartphone, but there are key differences in the display.

"The goal is to develop two types of the foldable display."

As these are just rumours, take them with a pinch of salt, though they do match up with earlier reports that Samsung is developing two successors to the Fold.

We reported last month that one will fold so the top meets the bottom, much like the flip phones of old, while the other will bend like Huawei's impressive Mate X.

Samsung clearly has a lot of work to do after it announced this week it was delaying the launch of the Galaxy Fold.

The launch was pulled after issues with the high-end gadget were flagged by early reviewers.

It remains unclear when the new launch date will be but it’s expected to be in the “coming weeks”.

It was due to be released in the US on April 26 and then in the UK on May 3.
