Black hole photo gives birth to hilarious memes – from spaghetti hoops to the Eye of Sauron

A popular theme was the Eye of Sauron – the all-seeing baddy from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

One Twitter user wrote: "Love to probe distant galaxies only to discover they're inhabited by the Eye of Sauron."

Another said: "That's no black hole, they found Sauron. Middle Earth here we come."

But the comparisons weren't all doom and gloom.

One joker quipped that the black hole looks like a spaghetti hoop.

Another said it resembles a cat's peeper.

And of course, there were the inevitable Brexit comparisons.

One tweeter posted the black hole photo with the caption: "Scientists reveal the deep thinking and careful planning at the heart of Brexit."

Another said: "Still not as big as the black hole that following Brexit has created in my soul."
