Virgin Media customers can get FREE WiFi upgrade that ‘speeds up your internet around the home’
Get a quick speed boost today
VIRGIN Media is upgrading your home WiFi for free – giving you faster speeds around the home.
Any customer can upgrade to an Intelligent WiFi hub and take advantages of new features that boost your network.
The first blackspot-busting offering from Virgin Media is the new Connect App.
Virgin Media describes this as the “central control panel” for Intelligent WiFi, and it’s free to download.
The app lets you test the strength of your WiFi from room to room, detecting blackspots as it goes.
You’ll also be able to manage devices that are connected to your home network, including pausing devices – like the tablet of a child who’s stayed up past their bedtime.
The second stage of Virgin Media’s plan to improve your home internet is a WiFi booster.
If it turns out that you do have blackspots in your home, you can order WiFi boosters directly through the Connect app.
Full House and VIP customers can get these free of charge, while everyone else will have to pay a £3-a-month charge.
Finally, Virgin Media’s Hub 3 router itself contains a “smart system” that helps adapt the WiFi to your needs.
For instance, WiFi operates on multiple “channels”. A Channel Optimisation feature makes sure that devices are being switched onto less-crowded channels, optimising WiFi performance.
Virgin Media also uses a technology called Band Steering, which gives gadgets a nudge to switch between frequency bands to optimise performance.
It should mean that gadgets that need faster internet – like a gaming laptop – will experience boosted speeds, generally.
And there’s also a feature called Airtime Fairness, which “helps to share out WiFi evenly across connected devices”.
Anyone can upgrade to the Hub 3 router for free – so you might as well enjoy the upgrade sooner rather than later.
“Delivering ultrafast broadband to help make Britain faster is what we do best at Virgin Media, but making sure this translates into reliable in-home connectivity is just as important,” said Virgin Media’s Richard Sinclair MBE.
“Intelligent WiFi will allow our customers to make the most of their broadband while also helping to easily overcome any connectivity conundrums around the home.
“With families using more devices than ever before, it’s vital they can all be online whenever needed.
“Whether it’s streaming UHD movies on Netflix, playing the latest games online or video conferencing, Intelligent WiFi has your back.”
Virgin Media recently announced ultra-fast internet that can download 4K movies in as few as seven seconds.
And late last year, rival BT unveiled a Complete WiFi “disc” that makes your internet 25% faster – and it only costs a fiver.
And mobile users will be pleased to hear that EE has confirmed the 16 UK launch cities to get “super fast” 5G internet in 2019.
