Apple fans FURIOUS over controversial Google ad that mocks iPhone camera
Gadget geeks can't seem to stop arguing...
GOOGLE has taken aim at the iPhone camera in a new ad campaign – and Apple fans aren’t happy.
The ad compares late-night camera snaps from both phones, to promote Google’s see-in-the-dark Night Sight feature.
Google launched the new feature late last year, using software tricks on the phone to improve night-time photography.
It means that with a Google Pixel 3 smartphone, you can take brightly lit photos at night – without using flash.
Google created a video ad showing this feature off, but also released a side-by-side image comparing two photographs from the iPhone XS and Pixel 3.
Both photos focus on the same subject, but the Pixel 3 image is much more brightly lit.
The Pixel 3 image is very impressive given the darkness.
Some of the lighting in the back of the photo is overexposed, but the final result is more useful for quickly posting to social media.
For the iPhone XS image, the model in the photo is very hard to make out, with barely any visible detail.
The comparison snap was posted to Twitter by Marvin Chow, VP of marketing at Google, who wrote: “Night Sight on Google Pixel 3 – pretty much speaks for itself.”
And unsurprisingly, this riled up Apple fans very quickly.
One user said: “Pixel 3 image looks way too fake, like someone turned up the exposure and saturation slider to the max and called it a day.”
Another wrote: “Over-saturated. Super grainy. Look at the picture on a bigger screen. It looks so bad!”
And some suggested the image was fakery – one wrote: “How about we get independent tests from sources other than Apple or Google and then we talk? What a joke.”
Someone else said: “Yeah it speaks ‘fake’. Sure the Night Mode of the Pixel 3 is really good at brightening things up, but the iPhone XS definitely is not THAT bad.”
One angry Apple fan even took shots at Android – Google’s mobile ecosystem – more generally, writing: “Meanwhile Android has no privacy, no Apple Health alternative, no Apple Watch alternative.”
But the replies to Chow were largely adoring Google fans, praising the comparison shot.
“It’s entirely preference of how you want the photo to look,” wrote one user, trying to bridge the gap between angry fans on both sides.
“If you want a social media-ready pic that won’t look like trash after it’s compressed, the Night Sight is great.
“But if you want a full-res photo that you can tweak and put somewhere, or use for a wallpaper, iPhone wins.”
It’s worth noting that the jury is still out on whether Apple or Google offers the best smartphone camera.
But a report by camera firm DxOMark (which tests phone cameras) ranked the iPhone XS Max above the Google Pixel 3 by a decent margin.
