Metroid Prime 4 faces huge delay as Nintendo bins game and starts from scratch with new studio

METROID fans will have to wait a long longer than they thought for Metroid Prime 4, as Nintendo has just revealed it starting the game from scratch.

In a video released today Nintendo revealed that Retro Studios, the studio responsible for the previous Metroid Prime games, would be taking over development.

The game was first announced at E3 in 2017, with fans hoping they would be playing it before the end of 2018.

Those hopes obviously came to nothing as 2018 came and went without even a trailer released for the game, and Nintendo has now revealed that is because it just wasn't happy with the work done on the game up to this point.

The game had not "reached the standards we seek", according to Nintendo's statement, and as a result they were canning it and starting over.

Strangely, Nintendo never revealed who was developing Metroid Prime 4 except to reveal it was not being made by original series developer Retro Studios.

It was eventually revealed that , in collaboration with Nintendo, although this was never confirmed publicly by either company.

The game's producer will be staying on board with the project, but all work on the game is going to be taken on by Retro.

Delivering the very formal statement , Nintendo's Shinya Takahashi, said "We have decided to have the producer, Kensuke Tanabe, work in trust and collaboration with the studio that developed the original Metroid Prime series, Retro Studios in the United States and restart development from the beginning.”

Nintendo said that it had not "make this decision lightly", but that it was the only way they could guarantee a game they thought fans would be happy with.

There is no word on when Metroid Prime 4 will actually be released, or indeed which platform is being planned for release on.

Given how long games take to develop from scratch, and the no-nonsense approach Nintendo is taking to quality control, it is entirely possible fans won't see Metroid Prime 4 until the Nintendo Switch 2, which is rumoured for release some time after both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Two are expected.
