Rocket League cross-play arrives and finally lets PlayStation and Xbox gamers play together

Fortnite now has some company in Sony's CrossPlay beta programme as Psyonix as the football-meets-demolition-derby game launches

ROCKET LEAGUE players on PS4 and Xbox One can finally play together after Psyonix' demolition derby football game joined Sony's PlayStation Cross-Play Beta test.

Since October, Epic Games' Fortnite has been the only game in the programme after the game's legion of fans' complaints finally become too numerous for Sony to ignore.

Cross-play should be enabled by default for matchmaking in all online modes in the game, according to .

The game will need a bigger update before you can create parties with pals who are one Xbox and PS4, but that's coming later in "our first update this year", according to Psyonix.

A date for that update hasn't been fixed by there is "more information coming soon".

Private matches do support crossplay, though, so if you want to set up a game with all your mates then you can, irrespective of platforms.

Prior to the beta, Xbox One, PC, and Switch players could all play together, but PS4 players were left out of the fun.

Sony Interactive Entertainment's CEO and President John Kodera made reference the hordes of angry Fortnite fans who had been demanding this change by saying Sony "appreciate the community’s continued patience" before finally announcing the change was coming last year.

"Today's announcement is an important one for us here at Psyonix, because we know how much our community has wanted FULL cross-platform support for quite some time," Psyonix' blog post said.

"It's because of YOU, our fans, and our generous partners on all systems and services that have made this possible in the first place."
