LIGHT IT UP

Change your iPhone’s torch brightness with this easy trick

Last year's iOS 11 lets owners of the iPhone 5S and more recent models adjust the torch's brightness simply by holding onto its icon in the Control Centre

IPHONE users are now able to adjust the brightness of their smartphone's torch, using one very simple trick.

This underreported iPhone feature comes in super handy if you want a dimmer or brighter source of light, although it's only available on the iPhone 5S and newer models.

The iPhone's torch is perhaps one of its 'unsung' features: hardly the most high-tech tool Apple has ever produced, but one that we've all had to use at one point or another.

It was first introduced with the iPhone 4 (released in 2010), which was also the first iPhone model to introduce an LED flash for its camera (hence the ability to use this flash as a torch).

But ever since Apple released the iOS 11 operating system in September 2017, the torch has had the ability to have its brightness adjusted.

This means that the trick outlined below is available only on iPhones compatible with iOS 11, which includes the iPhone 5S and all newer models.

Changing the torch's brightness is easy, and while some guides online state that it's possible only with 3D Touch-compatible iPhones (iPhone 6S or newer), it is possible on the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 (which are both compatible with iOS 11).

Here's what you do:

  1. On the iPhone X (and later models), swipe down from the top-right corner of the touchscreen. On the iPhone 8 (and older models), swipe up from the bottom of the screen
  2. Press and firmly hold the Torch icon
  3. On the new screen that appears, drag the slider down to lower the torch's brightness, or drag it up to do the opposite

That's it, but you should bear in mind that once you've changed the torch's brightness, your iPhone will remember your new setting the next time you use the torch.
