Super Smash Bros. Ultimate adds STORY MODE and new characters, including Ken and Incinerator
The game will be released on December 7, while a steady stream of downloadable content will be released for it right up until February 2020
NINTENDO has announced new playable characters and game modes for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which will launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on December 7.
The new characters include Ken from Street Fighter and Incinerator from Pokémon, while a new Adventure Mode sees the game's characters being transformed into spirits.
Nintendo held its latest Direct event today, during which it showcased new gameplay footage of the long-awaited Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
A sequel to 2014's Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the fighting game will feature over 70 playable characters at launch, including several newcomers for the series.
These new entries include the aforementioned Ken and Incinerator, but also Ridley from the Metroid series, Simon Belmont from Castlevania and King K. Rool from Donkey Kong.
One surprising entry will also be the Piranha Plant from the Mario series, although it will be available only to early buyers of the game.
Another welcome addition will be a new Adventure Mode, which will follow in the footsteps of the much-loved Subspace Emissary mode from 2008's Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Named World of Light, not much is known of its gameplay except that it involves the game's characters being transformed into body-less spirits.
While the trailer for the mode didn't provide too many hints as to what its core gameplay, it did at least serve to provide useful background info for another game mode new to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
This is the Spirit Mode, which will see the player's characters supported during battles by a range of "spirit" characters, who can either attack or defend on behalf of their masters.
Spirits are assigned to main characters according to the relevant game series, so Solid Snake will be supported by Hal “Otacon” Emmerich (also of the Metal Gear Solid series), for example, while Mario will be supported by a "Cappy" spirit (from Super Mario Odyssey).
Other than these new features, the rest of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is largely as you'd expect it to be.
Every playable character that has appeared in previous instalments will reappear, and there will also be a wide range of downloadable content released right up until February 2020, including new characters, stages and music.
There will also be wireless and online play, as well as two-player co-op, so that you can team up with a friend and face other duos online.
In other words, it's shaping up to be an absolute feast of game, and December 7 can hardly come around soon enough.
