Terrifying immersive VR zombie experience Zero Latency is set to invade the UK starting in Nottingham
The players control their full-motion avatars wearing headsets, headphones, military style backpacks and a gun in a special e-sports arena
A DEADLY virus is wreaking havoc,” comes a low woman’s voice in my ear. “The dead are walking and your squad need to do something quick!”
Ha! Stupid zombie game, how scary can it be.
Two minutes later, I’m cradling myself on the floor and howling in fear as Jabba the Zombie Hutt engulfs me. Behind him, more bloodied monsters lurch out of the shadows. Now, my heart is pounding and I’m breaking into a sweat.
“Get to the lift,” shouts my team member, Jay, a burly 6ft man in real life whose avatar is that of a 4ft girl.
I army roll across the floor and fire at the button on the lift, pumping the trigger as if my life depends on it. As the elevator goes up, the dead groan and claw at me like a shunned lover.
Now, I’m on the rooftop, smoke blurring the skyscraper view. The whirl of a circling helicopter muffles the zombies cries and suddenly I am swooped to safety.
The immersive experience in Nottingham is set to take the UK by storm and it’s not just for gaming geeks.
Even luddites like me - who thought ‘VR’ stood for some kind of nasty STD - can play it and, more importantly, enjoy it.
The deeply immersive 15-30 mins social VR experiences is expected to be a hit with stag dos and hen parties as it brings socialising with friends to a new dimension.
Players can choose between battling zombies in a survival game, intergalactic firefights in space or solving puzzles in fantastical alien worlds.
Players enter the arena equipped with headsets, headphones, military-style backpacks and a gun to navigate their full-motion avatars through the game. Senses are heightened as gamers manoeuvre through the hyper-realistic virtually generated world, all while set in a 180-sq metre e-sports arena.
To the outside world, you look absolutely ridiculous when you play, as you’re just screaming and walking around a black room. But your own view is completely terrifying and exhilarating.
What’s more, it’s a pretty good work out. I’ve played three 20 minute games and have walked 2000km (1 mile), burning over 100 calories in the process. And as a gun weighs 3KG my arms are dead (no pun intended).
What’s not to love?
