Sony PS5 release confirmed – but it might not actually be called the PlayStation 5
SONY has confirmed it is working on a successor to the PS4--but has refused to confirm if the new hardware was actually going to be the PlayStation 5.
Talking , Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said “At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware.”
According to the rose-hued paper, he declined to "formally" name it the PlayStation 5.
"People in the games publishing industry with knowledge of Sony’s plans" were quoted by the FT saying that "early indications" were that the new device would not represent a "major departure" from the PS4, and that the fundamental architecture would remain similar.
The PS4 is Sony's fastest-selling console ever, with over 80 million devices sold.
This is in contrast to the relatively modest success of the PS3, with many blaming the significant change in hardware from the PS2 to one which was much harder to develop for.

Sony recently hammered the final nail in the coffin of its portable Vita console and confirmed that it was not planning to make another as the rise of smartphone gaming had shrunk the market for a dedicated gaming handheld to such an extent that it was no longer viable.
It has been suggested Sony might be working on a tablet-like streaming device, perhaps offering a service similar to Microsoft's xCloud, to launch in parallel with a souped up home console that could also stream games to it, as the PS3 and PS4 could do with the now-defunct Vita.
Analysts quoted by the FT suggested that Sony would be looking to ensure its new console was powerful enough to be a platform for top-level eSports competition, an area that is currently dominated by PC gaming.
