Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead final season to be finished by another studio after collapse

Skybound Games, part of the group behind The Walking Dead comics, looking to re-hire Telltale developers to finish the game off

FANS of The Walking Dead games have finally got something to cheer about -- the final season WILL be finished and released after all, despite the collapse of Telltale Games.

The studio collapsed in September, cancelling all its projects and laying off all its staff after it ran into financial difficulties.

The status of its in-progress works was not immediately clear. Some, such as its Strange Things title, seemingly being returned to the drawing board, some such as Minecraft Story Mode were transferred to other studios, while others were being worked on by a "skeleton crew" of developers who had been kept on.

Last week one of the developers from that crew revealed they had, in fact, all been laid off as well.

However, those staff have been offered a lifeline by Skybound Games.

Skybound, part of the group that publishes the Walking Dead comics revealed on Twitter that they were talking over responsibility for the final two episodes, and wanted to work with the original staff to get them out the door.

According to a statement from Skybound, the company will work with people from the original The Walking Dead team to finish the series. “Skybound will work with members of the original Telltale team to finish the story in a way the fans deserve,” it said.

There are still two episodes of a planned final season to be released; a release date for either is yet to be confirmed.
