SWITCHING IT UP

New model of Nintendo Switch ‘coming next year’

Wall Street Journal reports that a new version of the hybrid console will be out some time in 2019, but the new features are yet to be determined

NINTENDO is going to launch a new Switch console next year, according to "suppliers and others with direct knowledge of the plan."

The Wall Street Journal that the new console could be here as early as next summer , but that exactly what is new about it is yet to be settled.

The new console "would likely share many features with the current version and be compatible with existing Switch game software," according to the report.

It will be a mid-generation improvement in the vein of the slim PS4 or Xbox One S, rather than a serious upgrade like the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, which both brought 4K graphics to the party.

One likely thing to be upgraded, according to the report, is the screen.

The current LCD screen lacks a lot of features that current phone screens now have as standard, and an upgrade to it could make it brighter, clearer, thinner and lighter.

You can play the Switch on the go using the built-in screen as well as at home and plugged into a TV, so making it thinner and lighter would make it a more viable upgrade to Nintendo's aging 3DS family of purely handheld devices.

The 3DS was launched around the same year time as Sony's Vita, which is about to have its life support switched off.

Nintendo has promised to keep making and shipping 3DS consoles, but with flagship franchises such as Pokémon moving to Switch, it's hard to see how much longer it can carry on for.
