Forget the iPhone XS – here are all the Android phones coming in October 2018

There are loads of top-tier handsets launching in just a few weeks...

APPLE'S new smartphones are finally out in the wild – which means rival tech firms are preparing their challenger handsets.

If you're not 100% set on buying the new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max or iPhone XR, you might want to consider one of Google's Android alternatives.

The run-up to Christmas is prime smartphone season, so we're going to see new handsets from some of the top mobile brands.

We've already recently seen Samsung's super-premium Galaxy Note 9 smartphone, which launched back in August.

But Samsung already has another smartphone launch event scheduled for next month.

And top brands like Google, Microsoft, Huawei and OnePlus are all still waiting to show their lot.

Here's what to expect, and when...

October 2Microsoft has confirmed an event for 9pm UK time, where we're expecting to see a brand new Surface laptop. But it's also been suggested that we'll see the long-rumoured "Andromeda" handset, which is tipped to have two screens. Microsoft has been quiet on the mobile front in recent years, so this could be its opportunity to strike back at long-time rival Apple.

October 3LG, a challenger from Samsung's home turf of South Korea, will show off a new phone at 10pm UK time. The handset is called LG V40 ThinQ, and being marketed with the tagline "Take 5". Keen gadget watchers reckon this means LG will show off a phone with five cameras on – trumping the three included on Apple's iPhone XS.

October 9Google is hosting a 6pm event in London for the launch of its next smartphone. We're expecting two handsets: the Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL. Both are tipped to borrow the "notched" all-screen design we saw from all three 2018 iPhone models.

October 11Samsung recently announced a surprise event mid-October, simply called "A Galaxy Event". The "A" in the tagline probably means we're going to see new entries to Samsung's mid-range A-series smartphone line-up. But it's also possible that the long-awaited Galaxy X (tipped for a late 2018 launch) could be unveiled too. That's Samsung's mysterious folding smartphone, which will reportedly be able to flit between tablet and phone forms at will.

October 10 – Gaming gadget maker Razer made its first foray into smartphones back in 2017, and will almost certainly launch a sequel at its October 10 event. The "mobility showcase" is still largely a secretive affair, but CEO Min-Liang Tan will be present – which means it's a major announcement.

October 16 – Back in August, Chinese phone giant Huawei confirmed a major press event for mid-October. CEO Richard Yu confirmed that the headline product would be the Huawei Mate 20, a flagship phone designed to compete directly with the iPhone XS Max. It's tipped to feature a large 6.3-inch display, and will come powered by Huawei's own new Kirin 980 processor. We're also expecting a Pro version of the phone, too.

October 17 – Popular plucky start-up OnePlus hasn't confirmed an event just yet, but gadget blogs are pointing to October 17 as a possible date for the company's next phone. The company has already confirmed that it'll be revealing a new OnePlus 6T smartphone soon, but there's no official date just yet.

Meanwhile, Apple's new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are already available to pre-order – and cost anywhere from £999 to £1,449.

They won't actually go on sale until Friday, September 21, however.

The cheaper £749 iPhone XR isn't available to buy yet, but will become available to pre-order on October 16, before shipping on October 23.
