Spotify is one of the world's most popular apps, providing over 35million songs to more than 180million monthly active users – 83million of which pay the £9.99 monthly fee.

But users are angry over recent issues plaguing the app on Android phones.

Several posts "liked" by thousands of users have been posted to Reddit about issues.

One customer wrote: "I can't share playlists or songs without it crashing."

Another said: "Spotify absolutely destroys my battery."

Other users went directly to Spotify to complain, posting about their issues on the company's official support forums.

One complaint on the forums revealed that music playback was stopping randomly.

The user also said that unplugging headphones would cause sound to play through the speakers, rather than pausing the song.

A Spotify representative responded to the user, confirming it was investigating.

"Here to let you know we've escalated this to our team and they are currently looking into this," wrote the anonymous Spotify rep.

They continued: "As soon as we have an update, we'll let you know. In the meantime, feel free to keep posting information you think might be relevant."

Spotify on Android – what issues are users experiencing?

These are some of the issues users have complained about online...

  • Notification controls disappear – forcing users to open app to adjust playback
  • Playback controls will play song but not pause it on compact bar – pausing only works in full-screen mode
  • Sound plays through speaker when headphones disconnect – rather than pausing
  • Music pauses randomly by itself, even when inside the app
  • Can't share songs or playlists without app crashing
  • Can't resume previously played songs without app crashing
  • Notable additional battery drain when Spotify is in the background
  • Notification that Spotify is not playing music won't go away with force-quitting app
  • Searching for music not working correctly
  • Searching causing app to crash, prompting re-login and wiping chosen app settings
  • Queued songs not playing when casting audio to other devices
  • Wrong info appearing for song currently playing
  • Spotify thinking music is being cast to another device, when audio is actually playing locally on device
  • Search only scanning offline music, despite device being online

A Spotify forum moderator called Daisy added: "We can see that a lot of you are having issues since the last update.

"However, it seems to be that some of you are experiencing different things.

"Please create new threads about this, so we can handle each one separately."

The thread Daisy responded too has hundreds of posts from many different users complaining about the app.

Moderator Daisy admitted that Spotify had issued some fixes, but they didn't necessarily work.

She wrote: "We understand that the issues have been fixed and then re-appeared for the last two months.

"Don't worry, we are looking into this right now and are eager on getting this fixed."

The bugs appear to be primarily affecting Android devices, including new and popular models like the Google Pixel 2 XL, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, OnePlus 6, Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, and LG V30.
