GAMBIT really is a game-changer. A hybrid between traditional player-versus-player combat and fighting computer-controlled waves of enemies, it's also a ridiculous amount of fun.

We've had the chance to play a few rounds over the summer already, and have learned a few things you should know before you jump in.

The core of Gambit is PvE combat, and is just a matter of shooting things in the face until they die

Firstly, it might seem obvious, but don't blow cooldowns to show off in the lobby when you can taunt the opposing team. Toss a grenade in the waiting room for a flashy light show, and you'll be waiting for it to recharge for the opening of the match.

Secondly, don't just bank any motes you get right away -- save them up at the start before you can send over a large blocker. They'll really throw a spanner in the works at the start before you opponents have got their footing and give you a decent chance of racing into an early lead.

Keep an eye on your bank. The last thing you want is a horde of blockers to deal with at once. It's worth trying to take them out at long range if you can to minimise the risk of losing motes.

Don't be afraid to mix it up and get up close and personal when you're not loaded down with motes - respawn times are quick, and if you've got no motes to lose, death is basically penalty-free.

Once you've killed NPCs, grab the motes they drop - the bigger the enemy, the more motes are left behind

If you find yourself behind at the end, then bombard you opponents with smaller blockers.

Multiple enemies cause serious problems when they're trying to destroy the primeval because multiple targets are much harder to focus down, and having to concentrate on multiple sources of damage at once make life much more dangerous for them.

Finally, to lock down a victory, save a super and heavy ammo for the end, then portal through to the other side and wreak some havoc. If the other team has a lot of unbanked motes (the grey bit of the progress bar), you can save yourself a lot of pain by forcing them onto the back foot while your team-mates start to focus down the primeval.

Destiny 2 is free all month long on PS4 for PlayStation Plus members -- and Gambit is free for all this from 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 1 until 6 p.m. on Sunday September 2. After that you'll need to have bought the new Forsaken expansion to play it -- and that's out on Tuesday, September 4.
