Products from Chinese electronics manufacturer Huawei may be security threat, says a Government report
Security expert Alan Woodward told the BBC that the company appears to be falling short in doing what is required to receive the green light
PHONE and internet kit made by Chinese tech giant Huawei could be a cyber security threat, says a Government report.
A probe found “shortcomings” in the firm’s engineering processes have “exposed new risks in telecom networks”.
The report concluded it has “only limited assurance” the company’s operations pose no threat and “significant work” was needed.
Security expert Alan Woodward told the BBC: “Huawei appears to be falling short in doing what’s required to enable the Government to confidently give the green light to use its equipment in critical areas.”
The firm said there were areas for improvement. It said no inspection had ever found any vulnerabilities in kit.
And it stressed it was a private company and not subject to Chinese security laws overseas.
The US and Australia are considering a ban on Huawei kit over concerns of Beijing interference.
