SAMSUNG is definitely working on a folding smartphone, but what will it look like? These concept designs may reveal the truth.
A gadget blog has created a series of short clips showing off how Samsung's long-awaited Galaxy X smartphone might appear.

The problem is that although we know Samsung is building a folding phone, we don't know exactly how it will fold.
Tech site reckons there are three main options, which it has visualised in a concept video.
The first is a phone that "folds into thirds", squashing down into a credit card-sized handset.
This works by the top third of the phone folding inwards, and the bottom third folding outwards.

It sounds wacky, but it's actually a genius idea.
Samsung would be able to fit the phone with a much larger display, knowing that it would then fold down to a pocket-friendly size.
The second option is a single fold that sees the top part of the handset folding inwards – roughly a quarter of the phone.
In this particular example, we see the rear camera flipping down onto the front of the phone.

This is important, because it would allow Samsung to ditch the front camera – and fill the entire phone's face with screen.
Then, users could enjoy top-notch selfies using their rear cameras (which are typically higher-spec than front-facing cameras).
A third proposed option sees around a third of the phone folding forwards.
This would leave a big chunk of the phone's screen as usable space, but (again) brings the camera onto the front.

It also means the phone would be able to feature a bigger screen, but remain pocketable when folded.
Of course, Samsung could opt to use any of these designs – or none at all.

All we do know is that phone makers are desperate to boost screen size, without growing the physical size of handsets.
Now that we're reaching the limits of how much screen you can squeeze onto the face of a phone, folding is the next obvious solution.
But making screens that fold without breaking (or having a permanent hinge or crease) is extremely difficult.
It requires the use of a flexible OLED display, which are expensive and difficult to manufacture.
That's why if we do see a folding Samsung phone, it's likely you'll have to pay a hefty premium to buy one.
Samsung is expected to unveil its folding Galaxy X smartphone in late 2018 or early 2019.
