Cheap iPhone X incoming? Apple’s £999 handset set for MAJOR price cut
APPLE'S ludicrously expensive £999 iPhone X could be getting a major price cut this year.
Two top industry experts believes Apple is planning to sell a successor model for as low as $600 – that's just £450.
Legendary analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple is aiming for a "more aggressive" strategy for the prices of new 2018 iPhones.
Countless reports suggested that Apple has struggled to flog last year's 5.8-inch iPhone X, which costs anywhere from £999 to £1,149.
Kuo says this year we'll see three models, including a budget handset with a 6.1-inch LCD screen priced at $600 (£450).
He also predicts that there'll be a slightly more expensive 5.8-inch handset with a better OLED screen that'll cost around $800 (£600).
And finally, there'll reportedly be a top-tier model called the iPhone X Plus, with a 6.5-inch OLED display.
This will reportedly cost as little as $900, which is around $670.
Kuo's theory was backed up by another analyst speaking to The Sun.
"We believe Apple is well aware of the sticker shock with the iPhone X and it speaks to a much more wider net it plans to cast with prices ranging from $599 to $1,000+ on the three smartphones slated for release over the next 3 to 4 months," GBH Insights' Daniel Ives told us.
"Apple needs to catalyze customers at all price points in this all important product cycle with the sweet spot on the $600 to $800 range."
Sadly, Apple doesn't actually sell phones in the UK using a direct currency conversion from dollars.
It's more likely that the three handsets will actually cost £600, £800 and £900.
That means the bottom-end model could be even cheaper than last year's budget Apple handset, the £699 iPhone 8.
So why is Apple seemingly slashing prices?
According to Kuo, there's "concern over the negative impact of a higher price" in the crowded smartphone market.
Apple has also reportedly made some savings in terms of how in manufactures phones, which makes the devices cheaper to build.
The highly respected TF International Securities analyst has an impressive track record on Apple leaks.
For instance, he correctly guessed the iPhone X screen size, the existence Apple's Face ID facial recognition system, the iPhone X price and details about the iPhone 8 camera – to name just a few on-the-mark predictions.
However, we can't say for sure what Apple's plans are, as there haven't been any official announcements just yet. As such, take this latest prediction with a pinch of salt.
In any case, we don't have long to wait – it's likely Apple will show off its new iPhone(s) at a special event in September.
