NINTENDO today finally confirmed the long-rumoured news that smash hit Fortnite was coming to their hybrid console, the Nintendo Switch.

Epic Games' shooter is available for download right now from the eShop, for free. However, if you've ever played on PS4, even ONCE, your account won't work, your progress and bling won't carry over, and you'll have to start from scratch on Switch.

It's only the free-to-play Battle Royale half of the game that's available on Switch for now, too.

The game is already out in some form for PC, PS4 and Xbox One -- the co-op story mode is still technically in 'early access' and not quite finished -- as well as iOS.

If you want to link your Nintendo account to your Fortnite account, you can do so to enable cross play and take all your progress with you.

However, that process won't work if you've played on PlayStation 4 -- Sony has blocked crossplay functionality, so if you've ever played Fortnite on PS4 using your account, you'll have to start a new one to play on Switch.

There are no such issues for Xbox One, PC or iOS players, however, as it it's just Sony's policy that's the problem here.

The lack of success for the firm's Wii U console compared to the smash hit Wii meant a lot of developers were initially reticent about developing for the Switch, especially given its unique position as a handheld / home console hybrid.

With the Switch passing the Wii U's lifetime sales in a matter of months and outselling the faltering Xbox One towards the end of last year mean that developers are now starting to take the platform very seriously indeed -- seemingly Epic included.

Fortnite's most recent port of call has been iOS, while a version for Android phones has been promised for this summer.

It's not all rosy, though. Recently Bluehole, developer of rival battle royale game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds sued to try and halt the game's runaway success, alleging it copied both its weapon designs and user interface.
