Destiny 2 reveals third expansion in the Reef – and Annual Pass for year two
Destiny 2: Forsaken kicks off year 2 on September 4 -- and could well the last major expansion Destiny 2 gets
DESTINY 2 only just got its second expansion, Warmind, but developer Bungie has now unveiled the third and possibly final expansion for it.
Destiny 2: Forsaken will completely overhaul the game when it lands on September 4, with a new story, a new competitive mode that is a hybrid of traditional co-op and player-versus-player gameplay, and huge changes to the game's weapons.
The release will kicks off the game's second year of content, and bring changes that will be seen by all Destiny players whether they buy the expansion or not.
As well as changes to how the game plays, which you can read all about here, Year 2 will also see changes to the way the game is updated.
Rather than expansions every few months, the game will feature " three premium content releases", which are expected to arrive this winter, next spring and next summer.
These will be all available to players who purchase a single Annual Pass, which you will be able to buy with Forsaken expansion.
They will drive the story forward through new missions and in-game activities, but additional material such as cut-scenes will be limited.
It is not clear if this means there will be no more major location additions.
Activision, the game's publisher, also confirmed that Destiny 2: Forsaken has been primarily developed by High Moon Studios "in partnership with Bungie" rather than by Bungie itself.
This, combined with the deliberate managing of expectations around the amount of content coming with Year 2's Annual Pass suggest that the focus of Bungie's core team is elsewhere.
More information on Forsaken has been promised at E3 in Los Angeles next week, when the story will be more fully detailed and some of the core changes will be shown off.
Activision didn't offer any more information on the nature of future plans for the expansion when contacted by The Sun Online, and confirmed that it would be leaving pricing for the pass down to retailers.
