HIT video game Fortnite has created an insatiable demand for the "battle royale" genre – and the latest entry is World War 3.

This multiplayer shooter is set in a future warfare environment, and is intended to be hyper realistic.

That puts it in stark contrast to Fortnite, which is notable for its cartoon-style graphics and light-hearted take on the apocalypse.

World War 3 is a product of relatively unknown developer Farm 51.

It's reminiscent of big-hitter war games like Battlefield, featuring giant tanks, powerful weapons and an appropriately gritty atmosphere.

But it's closest rival is sure to be PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds, the trendsetter "battle royale" game that's currently locked in a legal battle with Fortnite over copyright issues.

The game was revealed in an entertaining two-minute teaser trailer that includes a few brief snippets of actual gameplay.

We see assault rifles, body armour, fighter jets and drones – although it's not clear whether the latter two will be player-accessible.

Farm 51 is expected to recreate genuine armies in the real world, and has mapped out a number of locations.

What is Fortnite Battle Royale?

If you've never heard of Fortnite, here's what you need to know...

  • Fortnite Battle Royale is a free game
  • It's available on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac and now iPhone too
  • In the game, up to 100 players are dropped onto a fictional island
  • Players are then forced to battle it out in a last-person-standing deathmatch
  • To help, players can collect a range of weapons hidden all over the island
  • You can also collect resources – like wood, bricks and metal – to build defensive structures
  • The area you can play in on the island is constantly shrinking thanks to an encroaching storm
  • This means players are forced together over time, until just one person survives
  • The game has been a huge hit, and is also available on iPhone

Playable areas include Warsaw, Berlin and Moscow, although the final version of the game will likely have more zones to battle in.

Developers have described it as having "the most authentic bullet vs. armour system in the [first person shooter] genre to date".

And the style of gameplay will be "battle royale": that means players dropped into an area with one life each, fighting it out until the bitter end.

There's going to be small squad-style "tactically oriented" gameplay, too – this probably means teams of four players working together to achieve some sort of objective (alongside simply surviving).

There's no firm release date just yet, sadly.

But we do know that World War 3 will be available to play on Steam Early Access at some point in 2018.
