Fortnite-inspired mass battle mode coming to Call of Duty Black Ops 4
FORTNITE seems to be everywhere these days -- and that now includes possibly the most well-established first-person shooter franchise, Call of Duty.
At today's Community Event reveal for the Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII developer Treyarch confirmed rumours that the game, out on October 12, will ditch the traditional single-player campaign in favour of a last-man-standing mass combat Fortnite-inspired Battle Royale mode.
That mode, called Blackout, will take place in an enormous map that is a hundred times bigger than the largest maps the series has seen so far. That map won't be entirely new, but will feature iconic locations from across ten years' worth of Call of Duty games. It is unclear if it will feature hunts for rubber ducks, treasure maps, or indeed the letters C-O-D.
It will, however, feature weapons, characters and vehicles from across the history of the franchise too, starting from the Cold War era Black Ops through to the Black Ops 3, which was set in the 2040s. Those vehicles will be a mix of land, sea and air craft, but more details on exactly what they are have not been released.
Blackout will also features weapons and characters from Call of Duty's famed stand-alone Zombie modes, which pre-date Black Ops itself having debuted in 2010's Call of Duty: World At War.
Treyarch has promised that the game does feature plenty of content for the solo player across all its modes despite lacking a traditional story-driven campaign. This includes three new zombie experiences which look to feature everything from battles aboard the Titanic to gladiatorial combat in ancient Rome.
The game will be set "between Black Ops II and Black Ops III" - so some time in the near future.
The debut multiplayer trailer showed off a mix of familiar-looking modern weapons and advanced technology, such as auto-building barricades, assault-rifle size flamethrowers and some brutal-looking melee weapons.
Unlike Fortnite, Black Ops IIII will almost certainly be rated 18 in the UK, given it features real weapons, lots of blood, and copious amounts of very salty language.
