Instead, the app will have to be downloaded via a dedicated game launcher, which will involve visiting a specific webpage then accepting a number of permissions.
According to Eurogamer, the company would also have avoided Apple's app store, if it had been possible.
Have the beta invites been sent out?
As of May 21, 2018, the invites for Android have yet to be sent out.
The first round of invites for the Fortnite Invite Event on iOS were sent on March 15, with more invites sent in the subsequent days and weeks.

Does Fortnite have crossplay with PS4, PC and Xbox One?
On PlayStation 4, cross-play, cross-purchase and cross-progression have been available between PS4, PC and Mac since the launch of Battle Royale in September 2017.
From March 15, Fortnite also supported cross-platform functionality between PlayStation 4 and iOS.
On the same day, the Fortnight team announced that cross-platform play, purchasing and progression is available between Xbox One, PC, Mac and iOS.
There is NO cross-platform play between PS4 and other consoles though -- so if you've used your account on PS4, don't expect to be able to use it on Nintendo Switch or Xbox One.
They added that support for Android is coming within the next few months, and this is likely to have crossplay with all other platforms.
