Instagram update adds video calling feature – here’s how to do it
There's a new way to chat with friends on Instagram, and we've got all the details
A MAJOR update to Instagram will soon add a new video calling feature.
It's part of Instagram's ongoing bid to kill off Snapchat, which already offers video calls.
The new feature was announced in a blog post about upcoming changes to Instagram.
According to Instagram, video calling will roll out very soon.
"More than 100million Instagrammers watch or share on Live every day.
"But we've heard from our community that sometimes they also want to experience real-time video in a smaller group.
"In the coming weeks, we'll bring video chat to Instagram and give friends a new way to spend time together – even when they aren't actually together."
The move isn't actually a major surprise.
Facebook and WhatsApp (both Instagram sister companies) already support video calling.
And key Instagram rival Snapchat features it too.
How to make Instagram video calls
You'll have to wait for the update to land on your device before you can make video calls – some users will see it from today.
Once you've got it, making a video call is easy.
Just tap the new camera icon at the top right of a Direct Messages thread.

You can chat one-on-one, or even with a small group.
And there's no time limit on the length of conversations, so you could technically video chat for free forever – but who would want to?
Better still, you can even minimise the video and continue chatting while doing other things on Instagram.
Instagram says video chat is "testing now, and will roll out globally soon".
