Here's everything you can expect from the major Fortnite v4.0 update that rolled out today, Tuesday, May 1.

The biggest change is a brand new map.

That's because a falling comet has left a huge scar on the island – in the form of a crater.

Visit the crater and you'll find glowing "Hop Rocks" all around.

If you consume them, you'll be able to lift off with low gravity.

Here's what else is new...

Fortnite Update V4.0 Gameplay

Epic Games has introduced a host of major changes to Fortnite with the v4.0 update.

For instance, you can now destroy all structures on the starting island – except the Battle Bus, of course.

Headshot are now prioritised over other body parts that get in the way of incoming bullets. So if a projectile hits a target's hand blocking a face, it will pass straight through and deal headshot damage regardless.

Other changes include:

  • The hitbox size of player hands has been reduced
  • You can now see damage numbers when spectating a player
  • Knocking a player off the island awards elimination credit – just like normal fall damage would
  • Fall distance is now shown in the elimination feed when a player forces an opponent to fall
  • On the starting island, you'll be able to see other players roughly three times further away compared to before

Fortnite Update V4.0 UI

You can now mark cosmetic items as favourites in your Locker, and there's a new "random" option added to each cosmetic equipment slot.

When you've toggled Auto Run on, a new icon will be displayed to let you know.

The size of the arrow over players' heads when they're nearby has been slightly decreased.

And the game now supports a 4:3 aspect ratio for your TV or monitor.

Fortnite Update V4.0 Weapons and Items

The biggest change is that the crossbow has been removed from the game.

Epic Games has also tweaked the Rocket Launcher so that the aim reticle is now a fixed size, regardless of your movement.

Hit makers will now be displayed when you're looking through a scope.

And you'll now have increased pickaxe damage against Supply Llamas – a 50% boost per hit has been added.

Fortnite Update V4.0 Replay System

There's now an in-game player list to Replays.

And when you leave a Replay, you'll now be taken back to the Replay browser.

Renaming Replays has been capped a maximum of 32 characters.

And the size of the name column in the Replay browser has been increased.

Fortnite Update V4.0 Art + Animation

The mesh and animations for the Hunting Rifle have been updated.

Epic Games has also improved the equip animations for Shotguns, the Revolver, the Hand Cannon and the Rocket Launcher. The animations should now match the equip time.

The dust cloud that appears on player landings will now show for all players.

And storm wind now affects trees within the storm.

Fortnite Update V4.0 Audio

Timing for the equip sounds for all Shotguns has been adjusted. The cocking sound now occurs right before the weapon is able to fire

The volume difference between soft and hard landing sounds has been improved.

If you fall from one or more stories, you'll now land with a louder audio cue.

And there are now unique impact sounds when hitting shrubs, bushes and cornstalks.

Fortnite Update V4.0 Performance

Increasing network update rates means the smoothness of other players' movements on the starting island will be improved.

There are "significant" performance improvements when lots of players are on-screen, made possible by "reducing the impact of character parts".

Epic Games has also fixed "hitches" that happen in games where lots of building occurred, and optimised the level of detail for buildings in Shifty Shafts and Flush Factory.

Fortnite Update V4.0 Mobile

The quickbar now supports drag-and-drop for dropping and moving inventory items.

Holding your movement stick in a direction for three seconds now enables an option to turn on auto-run.

There are new buttons for Repair Building and Cycle Weapon.

Improvements to prevent finger creep have been added, and the aim assist strength has been slightly decreased at further distances to allow for easier fine-tuning when aiming.

Grenade indicators will now be displayed when grenades are equipped.

And improvements to low-end mobile performance have been introduced by dynamically scaling the background draw distances with player height.

Finally, the object draw distance for medium- and lower-end iOS devices has been reduced to boost performance further.
