SNAPCHAT has unveiled a new version of its iconic Spectacles sunglasses, which feature a built-in camera.

The new model has some major improvements (like waterproofing) – and we've had a chance to try them out.

Snapchat first debuted its quirky Spectacles glasses back in November 2016.

Since then, it has been quietly working on a pair of sequel specs that are even better than the first model.

The biggest change is the new waterproof design – it's IPX7 rated, so you can get them soaking wet without worrying.

And just like before, the Snapchat Spectacles can capture videos up to 30 seconds in length just by tapping the button on top.

But the new pair can also take photographs now too. Simply press and hold the button to take a snap.

The original Snapchat Spectacles came in some pretty garish hues.

And while the new models are still colourful, the colours are more muted – Snapchat told The Sun that designers wanted a more mature look.

There are three paintjobs to choose from: Ruby, Onyx and Sapphire. And each version comes with two different lens colour options too.

We think the new Spectacles look fantastic, and it's not just thanks to the toned-down exterior.

Snapchat has also trimmed down the size of the Spectacles, so they're less heavy and hulking on your face.

Even the bright yellow charging case is slimmer now – but it still holds up to four charges for your smart specs.

Snapchat told The Sun that a single Spectacles charge will handle around 3,000 photos or 150 videos – so you'll probably be fine snapping for days between charges.

There are some fab technical improvements too.

For a start, there are now two microphones rather than one. This means audio capture quality is significantly better, and you get a greater sense of noise depth when listening back to clips.

The big advantage there is that it's easier to tell who's talking in videos now.

And the quality of video has been boosted from 1088 x 1088 pixels to 1216 x 1216 pixels.

That means you end up with a larger (and effectively more detailed) clip.

Photo resolution is even higher, with pics measuring 1642 x 1642 pixels.

We've been using the Snapchat Spectacles for a few days, and we're seriously impressed.

The video quality might not be as good as a GoPro, but the Spectacles are undoubtedly a strong pick for Snapchatters.

Spectacles images and photos sync automatically to your Snapchat app, where you can upload them straight to your Stories or send them to a friend.

Alternatively, you can export the media straight out of Snapchat and stick them anywhere else – including rival app Instagram.

We've found the syncing system really easy, and there isn't really anything to complain about.

Perhaps the only downside is that you'll now have to pay more for the second-generation Spectacles.

Snapchat has bumped the price up from £129.99 (for the original) to £149.99 (for version two).

We're told that's because of the improved hardware, which is no surprise.

After all, you're getting a better camera, two microphones and a completely water-resistant design.

The Spectacles are available to buy from today at the brand new .
