What is E3 2018? All you need to know

E3 is the informal name for the Electronic Entertainment Expo, a yearly event for the video game industry.

All the biggest publishers, developers and hardware makers in the world will be attending to show off their latest wares.

E3 usually plays host to the top game announcements each year, and it's where you're most likely to hear about new gaming consoles too.

It takes place in Los Angeles, but typically only industry insiders were allowed to attend. However, E3 became open to the public for the first time in 2017, with 15,000 general admittance passes issued.

When is E3 2018? Official dates revealed

E3 usually takes place at the very beginning of summer, and this year is no different.

This year's E3 will begin on Tuesday, June 12, and will end on Friday, June 15.

It's very likely that announcements will happen before and after those dates though – some companies won't want their news to get drowned out in the E3 madness.

So what's going to happen?

  • Microsoft has already unveiled its latest console, the Xbox One X. So what we're probably going to see is a load of 4K-ready games. Possible launches include Fable 4 and Halo 6, and we're probably going to see more of State of Decay 2.
  • Sony also recently showed off the PS4 Pro so another console launch so soon is unlikely. Instead, look out for games like Days Gone, Shadows Die Twice, Death Stranding, and the long-awaited The Last of Us Part 2.
  • Nintendo has caused quite a stir with its hugely popular Switch console, so more games for the content-starved platform are the order of the day. Hot tips for an E3 showing include Metroid Prime 4 and Yoshi, as well as Pokemon Switch too. The company has already launched an official E3 , and confirmed that there'll be gaming tournaments on-site.
  • Ubisoft churns out Assassin's Creed games like there's no tomorrow, so another entry to the series is a possibility. We could also see an expansion for Far Cry 5.
  • EA is playing its cards close to its chest, but we could see some new sports titles like FIFA and Madden. There's also a chance we'll hear about Battlefield 5, too.

Of course, we'll probably start to learn more about what's coming at E3 as we get closer to the convention's kick-off.

The quality and quantity of rumours will also pick up as June approaches, so check back on this page for regular updates about the show.
