Best off all, they span multiple platforms, from PC to consoles and mobile. Some are even free.
Read on to find out the best Fortnite Battle Royale alternatives for every hard-boiled scalp hunter.
Player Unknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG)
Platforms: PC, Xbox One
The original battle royale game, PUBG is responsible for single-handedly dragging the genre into the mainstream, amassing a legion of fans in the process.
Starting off on PC, the game launched in early access on Xbox One in December, before which it added a second map and instant replay feature.
PUBG sees up to one hundred players, armed with various weapons, facing off in a large-scale deathmatch.
The title's been bogged down by cheaters, more than a million of who have been banned, with its developer Bluehole launching more anti-cheat tools in January.
Feeling the squeeze from the genre's new poster boy; Fortnite, its creator recently promised regular updates (every two months), a smaller map (also in the vein of its rival), and an 8x8 map coming later this year.
H1Z1: King of the Kill
Platform: PC
Like Fortnite, H1Z1: King of the Kill was spun out of a zombie survival game.
It also boasts a rich pedigree: PUBG creator Brendan Greene was a consultant on the title before moving on to the breakout battle royale hit.
H1Z1: King of the Kill is more straightforward than PUBG (which should appeal to Fortnite fans), thanks to its faster pace and focus on kills.
The game just went free-to-play, ahead of its inaugural competitive gaming (eSports) league.
GTA Online: Motor Wars
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
You know a genre is huge when Rockstar is forced to copy it.
That's what happened when GTA Online introduced a Motor Wars mode with its Smuggler's Run update in August.
It's described as "a tense battle for survival, where teams race against the clock to locate weaponised vehicles and hunt down opponents inside an ever-shrinking kill box.”
Remind you of anything?
The focus here is on vehicular combat (inside armoured trucks with attached turrets), and GTA's smooth online gameplay makes for a solid ride.
Chances are, you or your mates own the best-selling game, so fire it up and try out its own take on battle royale.
The Culling
Platforms: PC, Xbox One
While the battle royal genre draws inspiration from the Japanese film of the same name, The Culling is more like The Hunger Games.
Anyone who's watched the movies or read the young adult books will immediately recognise the premise.
The Culling is set in a jungle forest biome where 16 players shoot, whack, and explode one another to death.
All the while, a giant scoreboard in the sky racks up the kills in true Hunger Games style.
Be warned, this is a gory game with an emphasis on close-range, melee combat.
Overall, The Culling's colourful visuals and comedic style make for a refreshing change from the gritty gameplay offered elsewhere on this list.
Last Man Standing
Format: PC
The name says it all really.
Last Man Standing is a 100-man deathmatch in the vein of PUBG, only without that game's variety of vehicles.
But, who can complain when it's free.
On the flip side, it boasts plenty of weapons and attachments – but again there's a huge caveat: the gunplay is nowhere near as polished as Fortnite or PUBG.
Did we mention it's free?
Rules of Survival
Platforms: iOS, Android
Fortnite is heading to smartphones and tablets soon, as is PUBG (but only in China) so it was only fitting that we include a battle royale mobile game.
Yes, Rules of Survival has beaten its bigger rivals to iOS and Android, but it's not without its flaws.
The game lets up to 120 players go to war on an island they drop in to, which is pretty impressive for a mobile title.
The map is apparently decent too, and there's a good variety of guns and vehicles to boot.
But, as you may have guessed, the game can't match its ambition, and is hampered with bugs and glitches.
The reviews tell a tale of two titles: critics think its naff, while general users have scored it 4.7 on the iOS App Store (after 84,000 reviews and counting).
Until, you can get your hands on Fortnite or PUBG on mobile, Rules of Survival is your best bet for smartphone battle royale kicks.
