If you've ever struggled to get to sleep at night after using your iPhone, you may be suffering from the effects of blue light – but this easy trick can help you nod off like never before

STRUGGLING to get a good night's sleep? The light coming from your iPhone could be to blame – but there's an easy solution.

Some Apple iPhones have a feature called Night Shift, which changes the type of light coming from your phone screen to help you drift off to sleep.

What is Night Shift on iPhone?

There's some evidence that blue light from screens on our gadgets can mess with your circadian rhythm.

That's your body's natural clock, which helps govern your wakefulness and bodily functions.

Exposure to blue light is one of the stressors that supposedly affects your circadian rhythm, so seeing blue light just before bed can mess up your ability to drift off at night.

Apple's Night Shift feature for iPhone shifts your screen to warmer colours at night, and returns to normal in the morning – hopefully making it easier to catch 40 winks.

Which iPhone models support Night Shift?

You can use the feature on any of the following devices:

  • iPhone 5S or later
  • iPad Pro or later
  • iPad (5th generation) or later
  • iPad Air or later
  • iPad Mini 2 or later
  • iPod Touch (6th generation)

How to turn iPhone Night Shift on

There are two ways to turn Night Shift on and off.

For the first method, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Settings app
  2. Then go to Display & Brightness
  3. Then go to Night Shift
  4. On this screen, you can activate Night Shift
  5. You can also schedule a time for Night Shift to turn on automatically
  6. You can also adjust colour temperature

The second (quicker) method is as follows:

  1. Open Control Centre from your Home screen. This involves swiping up from the bottom edge of any screen. If you've got an iphone X, you'll need to swipe down from the upper-right instead. And on an iPad, you can also double-click the Home button
  2. Then, firmly press the Brightness control icon, then tap the Night Shift button (which looks like a moon inside a sun)
  3. This lets you turn Night Shift on or off
