Destiny 2 Forsaken Expansion DLC – what’s the release date, and everything else we know about the mysterious new year 2 update for 2018
Developer Bungie has revealing a brand new DLC pack that's coming on September 4 -- and how the game's second year will progress
GOOD news, Destiny fans: you've finally got some information on the third "major expansion" that's coming to the game later this year.
Bungie has revealed Destiny 2: Forsaken, which will kick off the game's second year of content updates when it's released on September 4, will bring piles of new content based on feedback on Destiny's first year.
Destiny 2: Forsaken is the result of the vast quantity of player feedback Bungie has received since the game's launch. It's a dirtier, grittier version of Destiny, according to the developers.
It may well be the last traditional expansion for Destiny 2, though -- the rest of year 2 will have three "premium content releases" that will drive the Forsaken story forward, but primarily through gameplay events rather than cutscenes. It is unclear if these releases will include access to new areas as previous quarterly releases have.
The new chapter will see players hunting down the "worst of the worst" after a prison break in The Reef--and more details of it have been promised at E3 in Los Angeles next week.
It will feature a new weapon system with more customisation options for weapons and loadouts. According to Bungie, those weapon changes will mean those players who want to keep their set-up as is will be able to--but if you want to just have three different shotguns to switch between, you can do that too.
There's also a whole new player-vs-player mode called Gambit coming, which features competitive combat against enemies.
Players will also get new superpowers too--but there won't be any new classes or subclasses.
Collections, which were promised in the May roadmap for the game, will let players see both items they've already collected, what they've got left to acquire and the bonuses they can get from them.
Content throughout the second year will be partly tied to a new Annual Pass. This will involve new "action-driven" story content and themed "seasons" of content, rather than full-on expansions.
The new seasonal changes will be open in some form to all players, though there will be aspects of it that are exclusive to annual pass holders.
The company has already released two expansions for the game – Curse of Osiris and Warmind.
Osiris was not warmly received by fans or critics, featuring a very limited new play area on Mercury, very very repetitive missions, and very very very little by way of new story content related to the main narrative.
The third expansion is expected to arrive at some point in September 2018, to mark the start of the game's second year of updates.
Space-shooter Destiny 2 launched back in September 2017 for PS4 and Xbox, and is a sequel to the hugely popular original Destiny game from 2014.
It's set in a "mythic science fiction" world, and takes elements from both first-person shooter and fantasy RPG games.
The game was released on Windows PC in October last year.
