This Facebook free iPhone X scam could land YOU in a world of pain
Con artists capitalising on X-crazed people's lust for a new iPhone to trick them into handing over vital info. Here's how to stay safe
FACEBOOK users have been urged to look out for scammers trying to fleece victims by promising them a free iPhone.
Apple has just released the iPhone 8 and will unleash the £999 iPhone X on November 3.
But hundreds of fake pages are now springing up on Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms offering the chance to get one of the phones free of charge.
Anyone who falls for the trick could end up in a world of pain, as the fake offers are designed to tempt people onto dodgy websites.
These pages are designed to fool victims into handing over valuable information such as their name, address or even bank details.
The tech firm ZeroFOX has found a total of 532 "fraudulent iPhone social accounts" which are designed to capitalise on Apple fans' insatiable X drive.
: "Apple’s annual product releases attract a frenzy of attention. But this year as curious fans logged onto social media to weigh in on the newly released iPhone 8 and X, cybercriminals had already set up shop, hoping to exploit the hype.
"The high price tag of the new devices... together with the trustworthy Apple brand, makes this type of social engineering attack particularly dangerous to the average social media user."
Luckily, there's a very easy way to stay safe.
If an advert promises you a free iPhone X on social media, it's probably lying.
Don't click on it and certainly don't hand over any personal information to untrustworthy sites.
