You AREN’T committing adultery if you bed a sex robot, according to law
YOUR hubby or wife has just told you they have been sleeping with a sex robot.
Do you a) thank your stars it's not a real person, b) ask if you can join in, or c) get on the phone to a lawyer in preparation for divorce?
If you've opted for the latter, you might find yourself in a bit of trouble.
Turns out that as the law stands right now, you can't cheat on your partner with a robot.
Neil Brown, managing director and solicitor at Decoded Legal, said: "Having sex with a robot does not constitute adultery.
"Adultery is only conducted between a respondent and a person of the opposite sex," he explained.
As the world's appetite for the bonkers world of sex technology and artificially intelligent sex dolls takes off, the debate surrounding robot romps is heating up.
Psychologists have argued that marriages which include a third - or even fourth - sex robot could spice up their sex life and put an end to affairs.
But campaigners claim that the mechanical mood makers could propagate rape culture, particularly when some of the bots come with a "frigid setting".
Jo Hemmings, a behavioural, media and celebrity psychologist has previously said that sleeping with a sex robot should be regarded as infidelity.
Hemmings reckons that sex machines may become a thorny issue that may eventually tear relationships apart.
What is a sex robot?
Robots already build our appliances, clean our homes and make our food – but now they're about to change how we get jiggy.
Sex robots are essentially realistic dolls that have sophisticated movements and "areas" that closely mimic humans so that they can romp.
Prof Noel Sharkey, chairman of the Foundation for Responsible Robotics, said guilt-free threesomes was just one of the potential uses for sex robots.
Others include “teledildonics” - wireless technology which allows a person to stimulate their partner remotely and already exists in vibrators on the market.
Sex bots will become hyper-realistic with features such as built-in heaters to create the feeling of body warmth.
They will also have sensors to react to your touch.
One company is even developing a head that can speak, smile and sing for its robot sex dolls.
Sex doll Harmony claims to be the first to offer an "emotional connection".
Experts say these specialised robots will start to appear in ordinary homes in the next decade.
These robots are becoming so sophisticated "that any clandestine relationship which contains a sexual element can - and I think will in time - be considered to be infidelity," Hemming recently told Sputnik.
A time when humans can marry robots could be just around the corner, according to one expert.
Dr David Levy, best-selling author of Love and Sex with Robots, has claimed that in just 35 years lawmakers will have to amend legislation to allow robots to wed, as society begins to view artificially intelligent machines in a more intimate way.
TYING THE BOT What is a robot sex doll, how much do they cost and are people really marrying them?
Concerns were raised over a sex robot brothel called the Lumidolls bordello, which reportedly opened in Barcelona earlier this year offering to fulfil men's “wildest fantasies”.
It's founder said it charges punters sex with lifelike dolls from £68 a session but claimed he had been bombarded with requests for paedophile and rape sessions.
The most advanced, true form of sex robot is Harmony, which is being created by the manufacturer behind leading sex doll maker Real Dolls.
Harmony is already able to speak and answer questions, like Amazon's Alexa, but is not publically available yet.
