"The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented," according to a Reddit status monitor at 8am.

At 8.30am it stated: "A fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results."

By around 08.45 the site appear to be back online.

Reddit said that it had been undergoing some scheduled maintenance which was completed at around 6.30am.

But more than two hours later there is reports of issues continuing.

The problems appear to be part of a switch to new databases.

Earlier this week Reddit warned: "We're swapping out three of our databases which requires a short site downtime."
