Silent Hill 2’s most difficult puzzle has finally been cracked and it has huge implications for the story
SILENT Hill 2’s remake launched in October and it blew away fans with its fresh take that still stuck to the roots of the game.
Developer Bloober Team differed from the original in a number of ways including a new collectible.
Throughout the world of Silent Hill 2 there are 26 mysterious polaroid photos to find, each with a phrase scribbled on the bottom.
Many fans thought they were just collectibles, but one Reddit user has cracked the code on Silent Hill 2’s hardest puzzle.
User DaleRobinson figured out that most polaroids featured multiples of an object in them.
By counting the number of objects in each image, then choosing this letter from the phrase, and putting all the letters together, a sentence appeared.

Silent Hill 2 Creative Director and Lead Designer Mateusz Lenart confirmed that the user had figured out the puzzle, and was pleased the code had been cracked.
He wrote: “I knew it wouldn’t stay hidden for long! There was a theory in our company that the puzzle might be too hard.
“I really wanted to make it subtle when I was painting those photos. I think the timing couldn’t be better for you to solve it. Congratulations!”
The following contains major spoilers for the story of Silent Hill 2, so stop reading if you don’t want to be spoiled.

The hidden message in the polaroids reads: “You’ve been here for two decades”.
People believe that this means that the Silent Hill 2 remake is a continuation of the original Silent Hill 2.
This means that protagonist James Sunderland has been reliving his time in Silent Hill over and over again since the release of the first game.
It puts the whole of the first game into a new context as many believed that James escaped from or died in Silent Hill following his ordeal.
Secret Hill
We love when developers put secrets and easter eggs in their games, and this seems to have been a difficult one to crack.
Bloober Team have handled the Silent Hill 2 remake masterfully, and this is a great way to add more context to the futility of James’ story.
We’re also glad that the developers are interacting with fans to let them know that their theories are correct.
