It comes after EU bureaucrats ordered tech firms to make their messaging apps "interoperable".

WhatsApp's parent firm Meta said users will able to see the "typing" indicator and read receipts in chats with other apps.

All messages will still be encrypted in line with European privacy rules.

The new update could reportedly come into force early next year for texts.

Video and phone calls will become "interoperable" with other apps in 2027, it is understood.

But the changes will only affect people in EU member states - not Brits.

It comes after WhatsApp revealed an improved "dark mode" and a new layout.

The app's new design is supposed to make it easier to comb through conversations to find the messages you are looking for.
