Netflix unveils cheapest-ever streaming package in the UK and US – but there’s a catch

NETFLIX has unveiled a new 'extra member' subscription for its ad-supplemented package as part of a trials in the UK and the US.
The new addition will be Netflix's cheapest-ever subscription option, but will end up costing viewers more if they want to use it.

The streaming giant introduced 'extra member slots' following its controversial crackdown on account sharing in May last year.
An extra member package is needed for any additional viewers outside of the account holder's household.
Viewers who try to watch Netflix outside of the account holder's address will risk being blocked from the service.
Add-on member slots have been available for an additional £4.99 per month for Netflix's Standard and Premium packages.

But those on a Standard with Adverts account have been unable to add any other members, until now.
The streaming giant has introduced a £3.99 extra member slot for the Standard with Adverts tier in 11 countries.
Netflix said it will be "testing" the ability for Standard with Adverts account owners to buy an extra member slot with ads at a lower price point.
It allows households to add another member who doesn't live at the same address, without the plus-one paying for a wholly separate package.

While extra members have their own account and password, their membership is paid for by the person who invited them to share their Netflix account.
Account owners who wish to purchase an extra member slot now have two options: to pay £4.99/$4.99 for no ads, or pay £3.99 for ads.

The new payment option will only be available in several countries where the ad-supplemented package is available, including the UK and US.
Netflix added that the new tier will be rolled out to all eligible countries sometime this year.
Customers on the Standard and Ads plans can only add one extra member, while Premium plans can add up to two extras.
The Standard with Ads tier is best value for money, and can save as much as £156 or $192 per year in comparison with the Premium plan, according to The Sun's latest calculations.
