PlayStation Technical Presentation: PS5 Pro reveals as they go live

All the news about PlayStation's next console as it happens

PLAYSTATION revealed that there will be a Technical Presentation, which “will focus on PS5 and innovations in gaming technology.”

Fans believe that this showcase will be used to announce the PS5 Pro and rumours about the console began to circulate online.

An silhouette was spotted in the PlayStation 30th anniversary promotional image of a new PS5 design.

A promotional video for the Technical Presentation was also originally called 'PS5 Pro'.

If you want to read all about PlayStation's announcement as it happens, we'll have everything you need here.

  • That's a wrap

You can read more details in our PS5 Pro news round up.

  • Reactions to the PS5 Pro reveal are poor

During the livestream there were a flurry of 'L's in the chat as the livestream came to a close.

One person wrote on Twitter: "Scalpers won't need to bother."

Another said: "Welp that's a pass from me. Pro versions are never worth it."

Most people are quoting the steep price, including the fact that the disc drive and stand need to be purchased seperately.

Others says that they can't see the difference in graphics, particularly for the price increase.

  • PS5 Pro will have more than double the storage of the original

Sony has confirmed that the PS5 Pro will come with 2TB of storage compared to the original console's 825GB.

It is also double the storage size of the upgraded PS5 Slim, which has 1TB of storage.

  • PS5 Pro will not come with a disc drive

The PlayStation blog confirms that the price for the PS5 Pro does not include the disc drive.

Instead the Slim's disc drive will be compatible with the console.

It needs to be purchased seperately and adds around $100/£100 to the console's price.

The blog reads: "PS5 Pro is available as a disc-less console, with the option to purchase the currently available Disc Drive for PS5 separately."

  • PS5 Pro price and release date revealed at the end of the showcase.

The PS5 Pro will launch on November 7, in time for the holiday period.

Preorders will begin on September 26, 2024.

It is also on the higher end of our price predictions at $699/£699.

UK players are particularly upset by the price which is the same in USD in GBP.

This is a stark price difference leaving UK players out of pocket.

  • PS5 Pro design revealed

As expected the PS5 Pro will look similar to the Slim but with three bars around the middle.

It will also not come with a disc drive, though we expect it to be compatible with the PS5 Slim's disc drive.

Like the Slim the stand will be sold seperately.

  • PlayStation announce the big three for the PS5 Pro

The PS5 Pro will have a larger GPU, advanced ray tracing and AI-drive upscaling.

This will allow more games to run in graphics mode at 60fps.

  • PlayStation reveals that players prefer performance over graphics

Mark Cerny claims that 75% of players choose Performance Mode over Graphics mode.

He claims that the PS5 Pro will allow players to have the best of both worlds.

It promises a smooth 60fps with the same graphical fidelity for a 'broad set of titles'.

  • It's live now!

Head on over to YouTube to watch it live, or catch the announcements here as they happen!

  • How big will the PS5 Pro be?

From the look of the silhouette and the apparently leaked design document, we expect the Pro to be similar in size to the PS5 Slim.

If it uses a similar frame work then it will also feature shiny rather than matt plastic on the face plates.

Keeping it similar in size will also mean it could have compatibility with the PS5 Slim's disc drive.

  • How much will the PS5 Pro cost?

This is the most hotly debated topic in the PlayStation community, though price estimates usually range between $600/£550 and $700/£650.

The 2TB Xbox Series X costs $600/£550 which is where this lower price limit comes from.

While PlayStation tends to have the pricer consoles, the PS5 Pro is expected to ship without a disc drive.

However, the PS5 Pro is expected to have upgraded specs over the Xbox Series X, which could justify a higher price point.

Whatever the price, judging by reactions online, people will be put off from buying if the price exceeds $700/£650.

  • What upgrades will the PS5 Pro have?

We expect the PS5 Pro to have more storage than the original model, particularly as PlayStation upgraded storage for the PS5 Slim.

It is likely that it will have 2TB memory which would put it in line with the most expensive Xbox Series X.

The removable disc drive from the PS5 Slim will be another big change if the design leaks are correct.

We also expect PSSR upscaling to be announced and the ability to output more games at 8k with 120fps.

  • When do we expect the PS5 Pro to be released?

Consoles are usually released towards the end of the year in time for the holiday period.

This means that the most likely release window for the PS5 Pro is November 2024.

PlayStation is currently preparing for its 30th annivarsary which is on December 3, so this is another possible release date.

We expect pre orders to go live shortly after the showcase as this is a common pattern for PlayStation hardware reveals.

  • What will the PS5 Pro look like?

A reputable leaker revealed a drawing based on what they claim is the final design document of the PS5 Pro.

A similar design was spotted in a promotional image for PlayStation's 30th anniversary, even though there is no PS5 model with this design.

It is believed that the PS5 Pro will look similar to the PS5 Slim but with three black stripes around the centre.

The design also seems to suggest that the PS5 Pro will have a removable disc drive similar to the Slim.
