PlayStation has added a new free upgrade that’s a lifesaver for handheld gamers
PLAYSTATION hasn’t had a new handheld console since the PlayStation Vita, but it has the next best thing.
The PlayStation Portal has been a huge success for the company as it allows people to play PS5 games on the go.
However, it is not a real handheld; instead it streams games from your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal.
This requires a strong Wi-Fi connection for both your PS5 and your Portal, which is where the problem lies.
While this is usually available when you are playing PlayStation games at home, it’s much more difficult to get a stable connection when you are out and about.
However, the latest PlayStation Portal update will make it easier to find stable internet connections to link to while you’re not at home.

Many public Wi-Fi connections require you to go to the establishment’s website and log in before you can connect to the internet.
Before the update, you couldn’t use these internet connections as the Portal doesn’t contain its own browser.
Now you can connect your Portal to your smartphone so that you can log in to these types of public Wi-Fi networks.
You’ll be able to scan a QR code on your phone to log into the website and then continue on your Portal.

There are still restrictions - the PlayStation Portal requires at least a 5Mbps connection, but speeds of 15Mbps are preferred to keep streaming stable.
The update comes with a number of other quality-of-life adjustments for players.
PlayStation Portal doesn’t feature a touchpad like the usual PS5 controller has, so players have to use the edge of the touchscreen instead.
There will now be visual feedback when this button is pressed on the screen.
You can also finally view the exact percentage of battery life left at the top right corner of the screen.
