AN INCREASINGLY rare piece of gaming history has been found unopened in a garage.
The item dates back around two decades – and could one day be worth thousands, gamers say.
Posting to Reddit, the finder : "Found an unopened PS2 in the garage. Is this worth anything?
"I'm not a PlayStation person. I probably would have been if I was gifted this when it was bought instead of being forgotten about for two decades. What do I do with it?"
Fellow gamers urged the owner to hold on to the PlayStation 2.
The original PS2 came out in Japan on March 4, 2000 followed by an October 26 release in the U.S. that same year.
This particular version has the model number SCPH-77001, which means it was part of the PS2 slimline release, dating back to late 2004.
According to the box, this is a Satin Silver version, which released in 2005 in Europe and came to North America in 2006.
One fan wrote: "Keep it for another 15 years then sell it."
Another said: "Save it for a couple more decades. It may seem like a long time ago but the PS2 was two decades ago. Not that much time in retrospect."

When the original Slim Silver PS2 went on sale, it retailed for £114.99. in the UK and $129.99 in the U.S.
At the time, then-Sony exec David Reeves said: "When we introduced the new slimline PlayStation 2 in November last year we delighted consumers with its compact size and elegant style, and hundreds of thousands of existing PlayStation 2 owners upgraded to the slimline model.
"The new silver model takes the elegance and beauty of PlayStation 2 to new heights."
The value of a vintage PlayStation 2 can vary wildly on its quality.
According to – which tracks the sales of gaming collectibles – a "loose" or opened PS2 withouts its box goes for around $90.
This rises to an estimated $163 if it's a complete-in-box offering, or $556 if it's "new" and unopened.

Better yet, the estimated price for a professionally-graded sealed unit is as high as $3,575 – although the sales volume is only listed as "one per year", so it's not a huge amount of data to go on.
The value of this particular Silver Slim PlayStation 2 appears to vary slightly versus the standard PS2.
PriceCharting notes that the loose value is $116, a complete-in-box unit is worth $191, and a new unit could go for around $700.
And professionally graded, the unit has an estimated value of $999.
