If you've got one of the latest Apple smartphones, a picture can take up more than 10 megabytes of storage if you opt to snap in super high quality.

But when you go in and start pruning those surplus selfies, you need to be aware that they are not actually deleted straight away.

, purged pictures are actually stored in the Recently Deleted folder for 29 days.

Normally, this is pretty handy because it allows you to think again before you delete an image when it makes you look a bit ugly or save the day if you delete a snap by accident.

But if the photos are still squirrelled away in here, you won't actually be able to clear any space.

To get ride of the Recently Deleted folder, open up the iPhone Photos app and press the Albums button in the bottom right.

Open this up and press select and two buttons will pop up.

If you press "delete all", every one of the space-sapping snaps will disappear. Click "restore all" and they will all pop back into another folder and be saved for posterity.

If only losing real weight was as easy as shedding the flabby photos from an iPhone.
