People are just realising three little-known Wi-Fi ‘dead zones’ – move the router for an instant speed boost
AN expert has revealed three of the worst places to put your Wi-Fi router that will affect connection speed.
Hub placement around the home can make all the difference to speed and reliability.
Hal Ponton, Chief Architect at Voneus Broadband, has revealed to The Sun three of the worst offenders that come up time and again.
One of the most common spots that cause havoc for Wi-Fi is hiding the router behind a TV, he said.
Another common mistake is putting it in a bookcase with the door closed, making it harder for the signal to spread out.
And the third problematic area is leaving the box right at the furthest end of the house that no-one actually uses, such as a utility room.

"It doesn't stop it working, it will obviously work but it's about giving the Wi-Fi signal the best possible chance to start off broadcasting, so really it's about giving it room to breathe," he explained.
"Put it on a windowsill, on top of a table or a chest of draws, just so that it's firstly close to the people that are going to be using it or where they're commonly going to be using it.
"And then as you're going through the house, you haven't already degraded the signal by having it have to punch through a TV before it gets to the wall that you want it to go through.
"So, you'd rather have it, the first time it gets to something that it has to penetrate through, you're giving it the absolute best possible chance rather than already hindering it, you know, as soon as it's coming out of the router."

Objects that affect Wi-Fi
There are a number of objects and materials around the house that can also affect your Wi-Fi connection.
Silver-backed insulation in your walls is one, so you should avoid putting them too close to these walls.
Similarly, we've previously heard how metal beams in kitchen extensions can have a bad impact.
If this is the case in your home, it might be best to try and move your router somewhere else.
