NAMEDROP was one of the big new features to arrive in the free iOS 17 update.
It's designed to make sharing contact details with people a lot easier.
So forget noting down their name and number.
NameDrop means you can just hold your iPhone up to the other person's iPhone and the contact details will be added automatically.
How do I use NameDrop on iOS 17?
To share your contact information, just hold the top ends of each iPhone close together.
A faint glow will appear to show that your iPhone has connected to another iPhone.

Your own contact card should appear on screen.
You can then tap to share your phone number or email.
There are also two buttons, Receive Only and Share.
Tap Done in the top left and the person's details will be saved.

Which devices support NameDrop?
NameDrop works with any device that uses iOS 17.
If you don't have iOS 17 yet, it's available to download now with compatible iPhone devices.
It's important to note that NameDrop only works for new contacts.
NameDrop can't be used to update existing contact details.
Does NameDrop work with Android?
NameDrop is an Apple idea.
So unfortunately you can't share contact details with your Android friends.
How to turn NameDrop off
If you don't feel comfortable with NameDrop there is an option to switch it off.
Go to Settings, then General.

Select AirDrop and look for Bringing Devices Together.
Switch the toggle off to disable NameDrop.
