A CYBERSECURITY expert has revealed how a simple red flag can save you from a money draining app scam.

Erich Kron, a security awareness advocate at specialist firm KnowBe4 explained to The U.S. Sun a warning sign that can help you avoid fake apps.

He told us: "One of the best things a person can do is to look at reviews related to the app, see how long the app has been available, and see if that developer has other apps as well.

"It's also important to note, if someone is offering a paid app for free, there's a good chance it will actually be malicious."

Experts often say that if an offer seems too good to be true it usually is.

That's a rule you can apply when it comes to free apps.

If you know you have to pay for the legitimate version then don't download a free version that promises you full access for nothing.

It's likely to be a scam that will steal your personal details.

Some scam apps also contain malware that can infect your device.

Kron added: "Be especially cautious if an organization wants to connect to your bank account or ask for credit card information."

This applies to all app purchases, even if you think you're save using the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

You're more likely to find scam apps on random websites that aren't associated with official stores.

However, cybercriminals can slip through even legitimate app stores.

When in doubt, don't download an app and find an alternative.

If you do download a fake app, delete it and inform your bank about any fraudulent bank activity that's related to it.

You can also report apps you're worried about to Google and Apple.
