Sonic fans are just realising that classic games could come to mobile after shocking purchase

SEGA has announced that it will be purchasing Rovio, the Angry Bird developer, for almost $1billion.

The $705million (£570million) purchase was recently announced on the Sega website.

Sega has said that the acquisition has been made in order to improve its mobile gaming division, which it has been developing over the years.

While this usually means older games, the merger hopes to bring, “Sega’s current and new titles to the global gaming market.”

Many of Sega’s older games from the Mega Drive era are already available on mobile.

Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic CD, Ristar, Streets of Rage and Super Monkey Ball are all available to play on the go.

However, these are free-to-play titles, which use ads between levels to increase revenue.

All of these games, and many more Sega favourites, are available for both iPhone and Android users.

Sega might be looking to go the path of Streets of Rage 4, a game that was released in 2021, and is available to play on mobile.

This allows players to purchase the full game for a low price, and then experience it ad-free.

There are also additional characters you can purchase if you want to give the game more replayability.

This is the more user friendly version of mobile gaming, though it doesn’t always produce the greatest revenue.

Translating Sega classics to mobile comes with further issues.

While Super Monkey Ball can use tilt controls to play, other games require players to use the touch screen which obscures the screen.

Where Sega goes with its new mobile gaming division only time will tell.
