AirPods owners receive a free upgrade – but it could be a huge hassle for some

AIRPODS owners can get hold of a free update that should make music sound even better from your earbuds.

But getting hold the improvements could be more effort than it's worth for some.

That's because the update can only be delivered via Wi-Fi from an Apple device in Bluetooth range.

So you'll need to have an iPhone, iPad or Mac - what if you don't?

AirPods can be used on any Bluetooth sound-emitting device like an Android phone.

If you're one of those and want to take advantage then you'll have to trek to your nearest Apple Store.

"If you don't have an Apple device nearby, you can set up an appointment at an Apple Store or with an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update your firmware," Apple's support page reads.

The update affects second and third generation AirPods, the AirPods Max and the first and second generation AirPods Pro.

Version 5E133 - as it's officially called - should sort out some "bug fixes and other improvements".

If you do own an iPhone or similar, you shouldn't have to do anything to get the latest firmware installed.

However, if you wish to check which version yours are on you can.

How to check my AirPods firmware version

If you want to see which firmware version your AirPods are at, you can from your iPhone.

Make sure your AirPods are connected before beginning.

Just go to the Settings and head to General.

Tap About.

Then go to AirPods.

You should see the firmware version among the device information.

You can crosscheck with to see which version you should be on.
