SETTING up a new TV is an exciting but arduous task.

There's a handful of mistakes that you won't want to make.

Mistake number 1: Mounting your TV above a fireplace

Perhaps unsurprisingly, a fireplace will warm up your TV.

But this can actually shorten its lifespan.

Soot can also get on and into your TV, which may block the fan and muddy the screen.

Mistake number 2: Expecting a home cinema

With sleeker screens, comes thinner speakers.

TV speakers have gotten smaller over the years, as technology companies bring out increasingly slimmer devices.

While speakers have also improved, they can be quite small - so don't expect a home cinema when your new device arrives.

It may also be worth looking into buying a soundbar to boost the audio.

Mistake number 3: Cleaning with chemicals

Using chemicals when cleaning the screen or even the frame of the telly can damage it.

Paper towels and other abrasive materials can also scratch it.

Using a microfiber cloth dampened with water should do the trick.

Mistake number 4: Assuming you know how to mount it

Mounting your TV on the wall is a great way to save space.

But proper mounting requires careful attention to make sure its alligned properly.

More importantly, a good understanding of the structural soundness of the wall is critical to avoid any needless drilling, replastering and a broken TV.

Mistake number 5: Underestimate the tipping potential

If the TV isn’t mounted on the wall, it’s important that you have a sturdy stand.

Kids will climb about everywhere, especially in the living room - where you're most likely to have a telly.

Make sure children aren't at risk of a TV landing on them when causing a ruckus in your home.

As an extra safety precaution, you can purchase safety straps that will anchor the TV to the wall.
