It's very easy to deactive.

How to switch off background app refresh on iPhone

All you have to do is open Settings and select General.

From there, find Background app refresh.

Then tap Off.

There are other ways to save battery, of course.

Switching brightness down helps massively too and now lots of apps offer dark mode.

Open the Settings and find Display & Brightness.

Under appearance, switch on Dark.

While you're here, it's also a good idea to set the auto-lock to 30 seconds.
